THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(for November 7, 1992)
One of the largest prize funds ever offered at a Russian
tournament was the $100,000 given away at the August 19-22
Moscow quick play event. Played at the sudden death time
control of 25 minutes per person for the entire game, the
tournament follows in the footsteps of several other premier
rapid play events held this year, including Melody Amber and
the S.W.I.F.T. World Cup.
But the Moscow tourney was unusual in that it was open only
to current or former Soviet citizens (and a few select others
who spoke the Russian language). Such a requirement hardly
served to limit the attendance, however, as 56 GMs (14 rated
over 2600) competed in a field of 84 players.
When the smoke cleared, Anatoly Karpov and two of the
American visitors, Alexander Ivanov (a former Soviet chess
teacher) and Boris Gulko (a former "persona non grata")
emerged in a three way tie for first with 7-2 scores.
Although Karpov won a playoff for the title, each of the
three received an equal share of $15,666. It is worth noting
that Karpov has bounced back admirably since his elimination
by Nigel Short from the 1993 World Championship cycle six
months ago with three significant tournament victories
(Madrid, Biel and now, Moscow).
One-half point back in the standings with 6.5 points were GMs
Valery Salov, Mikhail Gurevich, Lev Psakhis and Lembit Oll,
and unknown IM Evgeny Dragomaretsky. Each received $6,000.
Chicago GM Dmitry Gurevich followed with 6-3 for an
excellent ninth place finish.
Ivanov speculatively sacrificed his queen against Gulko in an
exciting 15 minute per side playoff game.
